Jimmy Garoppolo Signs With 49ers, Becomes Highest Paid Player In NFL
09 February 2018, 01:47 | Pamela Mathis
The San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo have reportedly agreed to a five-year deal
San Francisco had won just one game all season when Garoppolo became the quarterback but they proceeded to reel off five wins in succession to finish the season. After watching Brian Hoyer and rookie C.J.
But if Garoppolo can build on what he's already done and the Niners can add talent around him, there's a very real chance this contract will someday look like a pittance if the Niners and Garoppolo go back to the bargaining table (he'll only be 31 at the end of this contract).
The 49ers closed out the season as one of the hottest teams in the league finishing 5-0 over the final five games. A struggling team, the 49ers improved with Garoppolo as the starting quarterback.
Garoppolo is set to earn $27.5 million per year on the deal, with a reported $74 million guaranteed. There's going to be a lot of focus on that, but it won't last for long. Just wait until the Packers have to re-sign Aaron Rodgers. Russell Wilson will top it in 2020. He was eligible to hit the market at the right time, fresh off demonstrating he could be the league's next big thing.
The biggest victor from this contract, aside from Garoppolo, of course, is probably Cousins, whose sights are probably even higher now after Garoppolo got this deal after six starts in 2017.
Now, however, it appears Garoppolo is poised to add to the legacy of a franchise known for its quarterbacks: San Francisco, the team of Y.A. Tittle, Joe Montana and Steve Young, is one of two franchises (Rams) to have three modern-era QBs in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Considering the 49ers have more than $110 million in projected cap space this offseason, it wouldn't have hamstrung any of his other plans in free agency. "You know, we'll see what happens". All of this is based on a small sample - even when factoring in his time with New England, he only has seven career starts - but everything about that sample points to a pretty good signal caller. His 56.5 percent Success Rate - the percentage of plays that positively impact NEP - was also tops among this group. If Garoppolo turns into the star they believe him to be, the 49ers will have him on what is considered a cheap deal by 2020.
