Everything is managed from a central computer system, which coordinates the drones on the fly based on things like individual battery life and GPS signal.

ThoughWired notes that similar drone displays "have taken place before", the display featured during the opening ceremony is reportedly "record-setting", and other drone displays will be revealed "nightly for the medal ceremonies". It's a new PB for Intel's team for the most drones flown simultaneously.

To pull off the performance, Intel shipped all of the equipment to South Korea in late October and early November for a December flight.

Intel, which received heaps of attention for using their Shooting Star drones to put on a show at the 2017 Super Bowl as part of Lady Gaga's halftime performance, had been working for several months on the Olympics performance. Three hundred Intel Shooting Star drones were supposed to fly live, but poor conditions kept them grounded.

The Winter Olympics' first-ever drone light show has earned Intel the title from Guinness World Records for the "most unmanned aerial vehicles airborne simultaneously".

Salesforce has announced that it's investing $2 billion over five years towards growing its business in Canada. President Donald Trump has threatened to withdraw from the 24-year-old pact if he can't get what he wants.

One of the most mesmerizing moments of the Winter Olympics opening ceremony on Friday was the image of more than 1,200 drones working in unison to make the image of a snowboarder that then transformed into the Olympic rings. Built-in LED lights allow for 4 billion color combinations.

Because Intel's drones had never flown in such cold temperatures, members of the drone light show team ventured to the Alps to test how they would operate in minus 10-degree Celsius weather.

"It's in essence technology meeting art", says Anil Nanduri, general manager of Intel's drone group to Wired.

"We are excited to be part of the Olympic Movement to integrate Intel's innovative technologies to advance the Olympics Games experience for fans around the world".
