Joaquin Phoenix is reportedly in talks to play iconic DC Comics villain The Joker in a standalone film.
The Gladiator star, 43, is Phillips' top choice for the role in his DC movie, which will be produced by Martin Scorsese.
Reportedly, the actor is the top choice of the upcoming project's writer and director, Todd Philips, and is amenable to the idea of playing the character. WB has yet to comment and negotiations are not yet underway.
The two met before the new year to discuss the untitled movie and sources said Phillips, who will take on co-writing and directing responsibilities, was just waiting for the studio to give him the green light.
Faster growth could lead to further rise in interest rates
That view includes an assumption that Britain will be able to get "a smooth adjustment" to a new trading relationship with the EU. The central bank also expressed some concerns and revised its predictions of economic growth on the lower side.
The film is a standalone project which will exist outside of the DC Extended Universe, which includes films such as Wonder Woman and Justice League, and will therefore not affect Jared Leto's incarnation of The Joker in the Suicide Squad movies.
Confusingly, it has been reported that he will likely reprise the role in Suicide Squad 2 and the Joker-Harley Quinn movie that is now in development.
According to Variety the origin film, that is yet to be named, will take place in the 1980s and show how the Joker came to be the criminal mastermind that he is.
Joaquin Phoenix is talented enough to produce a range of characters that go every which way but through his portrayal of the nefarious villain of Commodus in Gladiator, an intellectual savant and the guy that was loved to be hated we believe he is flawless for the role of The Joker. He was previously in the frame for the role of Lex Luthor in another DC movie, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which ultimately went to Jesse Eisenberg, and was in talks to play Marvel superhero Doctor Strange, who was played by Benedict Cumberbatch. He was most recently seen in the Gus Van Sant film "He Won't Get Far on Foot".
