While many around the organization see Markelle Fultz, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, as a potential solution to that issue, Fultz may not play again this season.

The timeline of events, as recalled by CBS Sports, was unusual and disappointing for a player who seemed like the closest thing a top pick can be to a sure bet coming out of college.

Colengelo said, "There's always a chance that he's going to be out there soon, and there's a chance that he's not gonna play this year".

"I think he's got to feel right, and we've got to feel right ..."

Fultz was captured practicing jump shots left-handed in early November, but Colangelo classified his current shooting range as "within the paint".

"That injury led to a lack of muscle control and coordination of his muscles", Colangelo said.

Fultz's veteran teammate, J.J. Redick, stood up for the fresh-faced guard and the lofty expectations getting thrown on his shoulders so quickly. Fultz, the first overall pick in last June's National Basketball Association draft, will miss his 48th consecutive game Friday night against the New Orleans Pelicans at the Wells Fargo Center while he relearns how to shoot after rehabbing a shoulder injury.

As a result, he will have to completely rebuild the muscle memory of his shooting stroke.

"He's working his [butt] off", Redick told reporters according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

"From what I've seen him do instinctively - drives in the lane, spins, dribbles, rise-up, pull-up".

Sixers president of basketball operations Bryan Colangelo said Friday before the team's game against the New Orleans Pelicans that Fultz is progressing in his recovery — but with uncertainty. If the Sixers knew exactly what was wrong with Fultz's shoulder or why he had suddenly lost the ability to shoot, they would be able to treat him, rehab him and work him back onto the court.

"We don't know what the cause of the injury was", Colangelo said.

Eventually, Colangelo simply cut the press conference short, and walked off, refusing to give an update on the timeline for Fultz.
