General manager Chris Ballard spoke with two candidates in particular, via NFL.com. Now, the question becomes: who is the right fit to lead the team back into contention? Reich was Peyton Manning's quarterbacks coach in 2009 and '10 before coaching Reggie Wayne and the rest of the receivers in 2011.
Ballard also interviewed Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier on Saturday. DeFilippo replaces Pat Shurmur, who is now the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings. The Colts wentz 4-12 last season and haven't reached the playoffs the last three years. The Colts had this focus in mind when then hired former coach Chuck Pagano, but his defenses never lived up to the hype. Reich spent the last two seasons as the Eagles offensive coordinator. They've reportedly landed on another Super Bowl OC.
Reich may want to take some current Eagles assistants with him, too, keeping in line with the business model that is the NFL.
Although Reich did not call the plays with the Eagles, he did have a big hand in putting together the game plan, with head coach Doug Pederson putting plenty of trust into Reich's ideas. Campbell is known for his authority and the discipline of his teams. Reich was with the Colts mostly as an offensive assistant from 2006-11.
After winning the first Super Bowl in franchise history, the Eagles are watching their championship coaching staff dismantled. His offense exposed the weaknesses of the Patriots on defense, which is tough to do against Bill Belichick.
