A senior White House official said Pence was not trying to avoid the delegation from North Korea but rather ignore them, according to the AP.

The Korean fans' enthusiasm for Saturday's game was not dampened by the scoreline, as many saw it marking progress towards peace on the Korean peninsula and hundreds of spectators waved unification flags.

In an interview with NBC, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said Washington will continue to put all the pressure to bear on North Korea economically and diplomatically, while preserving all of its military options to see that that happens.

"Our resolve to stand with you is unshakable", Pence said.

Officials traveling with Pence said it would be fair to characterize his failure to interact with the North Koreans as a mutual decision, with neither side making any public overtures.

Pence warned before departing Japan earlier Thursday that past attempts to pursue openings with the North have been met with "willful deception, broken promises and endless and escalating provocations". During the games, they're also accompanied by government minders tasked with security, supervision and translation duties who report suspicious activities back to Pyongyang, Young said.

But it was Pence who cast one of the loneliest figures at the event.

"Now is not the time to postpone U.S".

Tensions between his country, its near neighbours and the United States have ratcheted up over the previous year after North Korea conducted a series of missile tests.

Lee expressed his hopes to the delegation that the "right conditions" would be created for the two heads of state to meet, the official said later.

At the start of the meeting, Lee shook hands with the North's chief delegate and then with Kim Yo-jong, as well as other members of the delegation.

Kim Jong Un has invited Moon to visit Pyongyang, the presidential Blue House said.

Moon has supported USA -led sanctions against the North, but he has repeatedly called for dialogue.

"Is it really that different from speaking to someone from another region in South Korea?".

Pence's cold demeanor toward the North Koreans at the Pyeongchang games was overshadowed by friendly cooperation between the North and South.

The Games has seen better ties between the two Koreas despite tensions over the North's nuclear programme.

The delegation has been in the country since arriving Friday to attend the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

He also ratcheted up his rhetoric on the North's human-rights abuses in a speech to USA service members at Yokota Air Base in Japan.

The protestors also directed their ire toward South Korean president Moon Jae-in, who has taken a softer stance toward North Korea than previous leaders. "Even for a moment, it appears to be a normal state".
