Four elephants die after a collision with a speeding train in Assam
Four elephants died when they were trapped between the fence and the tracks while the condition of the fifth one has been reported to be serious when 15611 Guwahati-Silchar fast passenger train hit the elephants.
None of the train passengers were injured during the accident, which derailed the vehicle.
The wildlife activists said that accident took place at about 9.30 pm near Habaipur an area, which has been identified as an elephant corridor.
The incident took place near the Hawaipur railway station in Nagaon district. "While prima facie inquiry has revealed that the train was within its stipulated speed, a departmental inquiry has been ordered to find out details about adherence to protocols", it said.
On November 19 previous year, two adult elephants were killed after being hit by speeding train near Thakurkuchi railway station located close to Guwahati.
Regional railways spokesman Pranav Jyoti Sharma told The Times of India: 'It is only because of the close co-ordination between field level officials of both the forest and railway department that many elephants were saved'.
Earlier on December 10 a year ago, five elephants, including a pregnant female were killed when the Guwahati-Naharlagun Donyi Polo Express hit a herd crossing tracks near Balipara in Sonitpur district.
Five elephants were killed in December after they were hit by a train in the same state.
There has been a manifold increase in the incidents of elephant crossings during the recent past and trains are constantly slowed down whenever any information of herd movement is shared with the railway by the forest department. Download The for your device.in English and other languages.
