Winter Olympics 2018: Live Results and Schedule

Nikita Kopyrenko of Kazakhstan carries his sled away from the finish area after the first round of the men's luge at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang South Korea Saturday Feb. 10 2018

American luge racer Chris Mazdzer is competing for the gold during the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea, and he's stealing quite a few hearts in the process.

Hey, it took just 54 years.

But there was joy for the unheralded Gleirscher, 23, who took gold ahead of the American Chris Mazdzer.

"It's 16 years in the making", Mazdzer, a three-time Olympian, told NBC afterward. Whenever you lose, keep fighting.

He was in fifth place after Run 1 and then moved up a spot to fourth place in Run 2, but it was his performances in Runs 3 and 4 that sealed the deal. He completed the four runs with a cumulative time of 3 minutes, 10.702 seconds, edging out Mazdzer by 0.026. He conquered the infamous ninth curve easily to put himself into ideal position for a medal.

Could a North Korean athlete defect to South Korea during the Olympics?
The Koreas are technically still at war, as a truce - and not a peace treaty - ended combat between the countries in 1953. The ex-North Korean officer says members of the delegation will also be expected to inform on each other.

Indiana Basketball: Saturday look around the Big Ten
Miles Bridges was a one-man crew dribbling to his right and firing off a deep three to break the tie and defeat Purdue 68-65. Michigan State jumped in front for the first time when Bridges made a jumper near the top of the key with 9:06 left.

Market volatility has gone through the roof. Here's why that matters
Although the washout was violent, it was extremely quick, and stock markets have bounced more than 5 percent off Tuesday's lows. A key measure of market volatility is surging in early trading Tuesday after a triple-digit percentage move the previous day.

But, Germany's Felix Loch who looked like he was on his way to his third consecutive Olympic gold, faltered on the final run and finished 5th. "I'm an outsider. I like being the underdog". He shot out of the starting gate and barreled down the course, sliding flawlessly down the hill. In the end, it left Gleirscher and Mazdzer shocked, but thrilled.

Mazdzer, who describes himself as a goofball who knows how to flip the switch to serious when he needs, beamed after crossing the finish line. Today in PyeongChang, he was going for a third straight gold medal, and would become only the second man in history to do so.

American Tucker West is in 18th place and more than a second behind Loch.

The best the USA had ever done in the Olympic event was fourth-place finishes by Tony Benshoof in 2006 and Adam Heidt in 2002. And when it comes to men's singles luge, Mazdzer will always be the first.
