INX Money Laundering Case: Karti Chidambaram in 6-day CBI custody

Singhvi was speaking in the Special CBI court in New Delhi where Karti Chidambaram was produced after his one day remand period. The CBI sought custodial interrogation for 15 days, claiming that he is not cooperating but given a days custody only.

Karti Chidambaram was arrested at Chennai airport on Wednesday after he returned from the United Kingdom in connection with the INX Media case.

According to PTI, the former Finance minister's son was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation in relation to a case over the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval granted in 2007 for receipt of funds by INX Media.

In court on Thursday, the CBI counsel, Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, had this to say while seeking a 14-day remand for Karti Chidambaram.

Karti was arrested on Wednesday at Chennai Airport on his return from the United Kingdom in connection with the FIR lodged on May 15 past year alleging irregularities in the FIPB clearance to INX Media for receiving overseas funds to the tune of Rs 305 crore in 2007 when P Chidambaram was the union finance minister. How can CBI claim non-cooperation when they haven't issued summons to me. CBI should explain Karti Chidambaram's arrest and remand. All this will need time and a 14-day custody is essential for this.

During the course of the hearing, Singhvi also accused CBI of leaking the statement made by Indrani Mukherjee under 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure to the media, and promoting the same on WhatsApp. Peter and Indrani, facing trial for allegedly killing their daughter Sheena Bora, had said in their statement that Karti "suggested" to them the names of firms such as Chess Management and Advantage Strategic for the payments.

Special Judge Sunil Rana extended Karti's custody till March 6, 2018, after the CBI contended that there were "very shocking evidences" of what he has done when he went overseas and alleging "when he went overseas, he closed bank accounts in which funds were received". "He was perfectly fine in morning but gave evasive answers when CBI questioned him", CBI was quoted by ANI. During the raids, the ED had also recovered "digital evidence" and invoices raised on INX Media Limited, sources said.

Defending Karti Chidambaram, his lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi told the special CBI court that it was the then finance minister P. Chidambaram who had initiated the first investigations into the alleged scandal by referring the case to the ministry of corporate affairs which ordered a Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) probe.

"It is my duty to satisfy the court", Mehta said while placing supreme court judgement and clarifies why the arrest was made.

"CBI is going by evidence". He said Karti appeared before the CBI and Enforcement Directorate for 30-40 hours and cooperated.

Regarding the bribe allegation, Singhvi said Karti Chidambaram was not a director or a shareholder of Advantage Strategic company, one of the companies through which the Mukerjeas had allegedly paid the bribe.
