MI overcomes shooting woes to beat Iowa
04 March 2018, 01:01 | Rodolfo Wallace
The Michigan Wolverines pulled off an overtime win Thursday against the Iowa Hawkeyes
The Huskers are 19-40 all-time in conference tournaments, which dates back to the start of the Big Eight Tournament in 1977.
The first game of the day will be No. 9 Wisconsin vs.
But it was an nearly unfathomable first-half dry spell that did the Huskers in.
"We just knew it was win or go home", Matthews said of the Wolverines' mindset at that point. "That is the goal, to go cut the nets down". The refs took the flow out of this game, so credit MI for having to overcome that.
I appreciate the sacrifices the teams made, the impact it had on our students. "They got it going on the offensive end which also helped them on defense". MI jumped out to a 33-15 lead and forced Nebraska i nto a 1-for-20 shooting stretch in the first half.
Nebraska closed the first half strong, going on a 9-1 run in the closing minutes of the first half.
Overall, the Huskers went 7-for-30, just 23 percent, from the floor in the first half, including just 1-for-6 from beyond the arc. "We haven't had three guys in foul trouble in the first half, and our situation in the second half, with guys fouling out", MI coach John Beilein said.
No.5 MI vs No.4 Nebraska.
The Wolverines did an especially good job of limiting Bohannon. "We got a little panicky, and MI will make you do that". Charles Matthews led the Wolverines with 16 points, Zavier Simpson added 12 points and Duncan Robinson contributed 11 points. Both were off. Robinson hit two free throws to extend the lead to five with 10 seconds left. Abdur-Rahkman fouled out with 2:34 left in overtime, having scored nine points in 22 minutes.
Just three teams have beaten the Wolverines in 2018. Over the same span, Nebraska went on a 2:18 scoring drought.
Closing ceremony of 2018 Winter Olympics
Norway had a fantastic outing at the 2018 Winter Olympics , finishing with 39 medals overall. John Shuster captained the team to glory with a 10-7 win over Sweden to earn a famous win.
With Iowa trailing by 3 with 16 seconds left, Jordan Bohannon hit a huge 3-pointer to send the game into overtime and give Iowa another chance to come out on top. The sophomore guard had just come off of a 25-point game against IL the previous night.
However, it looked like MI might not get its chance after a wild finish in regulation that led to an extra five minutes.
Five players are averaging at least 8.2 points per game for Nebraska, they are James Palmer Jr.
With the Huskers now waiting for Selection Sunday on March 11, Miles said he believes the team is still deserving of a tournament spot.
With Michigan's stars saddled with foul trouble, and the shots just not falling, the 15th-ranked Wolverines got a lift from their senior sixth man to survive their Big Ten Tournament opener.
"I have no idea how we won the game", MI coach John Beilein said.
MI was led by senior guard Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman who scored 21 points on 7-13 shooting, including 5-5 from beyond the arc. Wagner fouled out with 4:39 to play, he scored 11 points in just 15 minutes.
If Nebraska is left out, the Big Ten is looking at getting only four teams in the tournament, barring an upset victor at the Garden.
To earn their spot in the semifinals, Michigan State took down No. 9 seed Wisconsin 63-60 to advance to the semifinals. The Wolverines, who have won seven in a row, beat the Spartans in East Lansing on January 13.
MI sophomore center Jon Teske had nine rebounds against the Hawkeyes.
