Overall, opioidoverdose emergency room visits increased 35 percent in the 16 states hit hard by the epidemic.
The report did not include the state rates per 100,000 overdose-related deaths, which is a more stable measure of increases and decreases over time, according to the Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH).
The CDC recommends a better response to drug addiction and overdose to fight the issue, including broader access to the overdose prevention drug narcan.
"We think that the number of people addicted to opioids is relatively stable". The drug-related deaths reported were not just related to prescription or illicit opioids.
That survey showed an increase of 29.7 percent in 52 jurisdictions in 45 states between July through September 2016 and the same period in 2017, according to the report.
"Long before we receive data from death certificates, emergency department data can point to alarming increases in opioid overdoses", Schuchat said in a statement. Too often, addicts are simply revived and sent home without follow-up care, only to overdose again, she says.
Schuchat called the report "very, very concerning" and said it served as a "wake-up call about the need to improve what happens when a patient leaves the emergency department". "The quantity of Americans encountering opioid overdoses is as yet expanding".
"We wanted more timely information", Schuchat says.
But when a person dies and a drug overdose is suspected, medical examiners and coroners launch investigations that sometimes take weeks, if not months, to complete. "This fast-moving epidemic affects both men and women, and people of every age".
Other major outbreaks of overdoses included a 105 percent increase in DE, an 81 percent increase in Pennsylvania, and a 34 percent increase in Maine. And just last week, he held a high-profile summit on the epidemic at the White House. For instance, crisis room staff require better preparing to ensure addicts get follow-up enslavement treatment, says Jessica Hulsey Nickel, president and CEO of the Addiction Policy Forum.
"Science is clear: Addiction is a chronic disease and not a moral failing", the doctor said.
