Valve is making games again with a focus on VR, just don't expect Half-Life 3 just yet

Valve “jealous of Nintendo” as it prepares to “start shipping games again” – Newell

"Hooray! Valve's going to start shipping games again!"

He's previously spoken about a singleplayer game and "three big VR games" being in development, but he didn't reveal anything specific or offer updates during Thursday's presentation. "That's something we've been jealous of, and that's something you'll see us taking advantage of subsequently".

It should also be pointed out that there's now a Half-Life crossover with Final Fantasy XV in the form of a special outfit if you got the Windows Edition of the game through Steam.

Furthermore, Newell expressed concerns about the direction that the PC games market was set in - saying that it was becoming more of a closed ecosystem.

Now though, it's time to start making games again. Steam is the go to gaming client for PC gamers and when the Steam application was put into hardware form with the consoles,'s safe to say that Newell and the team's focus shifted from software to a more hardware-centric bottom line. Newell's statement doesn't clarify if there are projects in the works beyond those games, but nature of the statement does seem to indicate that there are things coming we don't yet know about. The marketplace generates a lot of revenue even when the company does nothing, so producing games isn't all that commercially viable compared to simply sitting back and watching the money roll in. The way Newell sees it, "nobody's going to buy a VR system so they can watch movies", so why would they do it to play the games they've already played? But he made sure to point out that it's not the only game on Valve's slate. We can design chips if we need to, we can do industrial design, and so on. He also spoke of Valve's worry that too many companies were moving PC games towards closed, proprietary ecosystems like the iPhone. "It's not about being in hardware, it's about building better games".

Valve hasn't had a major game release since the launch of Dota 2 in 2013, and Portal 2 from 2011 was the last single-player game that came out of the studio. And he can make the hardware look as good as possible because he's designing the software at the same time.
