Recordings of 911 calls from Florida shooting released

"Three shot in her room. Oh my God. Oh my God".

The shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School was Florida's third mass shooting since June 2016. That material also included 10 of the 81 recordings of frantic calls by students and parents to a 911 centre. The excerpts show a deputy on school grounds first thought the loud bangs were firecrackers, then realized they were gunshots - yet he never ran toward them. The Snead son, a junior, wasn't injured in the February 14 shooting.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott has signed a school safety bill passed by the Legislature in response to the Valentine's Day mass shooting that killed 17 people at a high school.

"Today should serve as an example to the entire country that government can and must move fast", Scott said in remarks before the signing, surrounded by survivors of the shooting and their families.

The lawsuit came just hours after Gov. Scott, a Republican, signed the compromise bill Friday afternoon.

Some gun control advocates framed Scott's decision in political terms as a rare defeat for the NRA, which has been a powerful force in Tallahassee and other state capitals for decades. He had received top marks from the lobbying group in the past for supporting gun-rights measures, and his new stance reinvigorated the gun-control movement.

"Allows law enforcement to seize firearms when a person has been detained under the "Baker Act.' Also prohibits a person who has been "adjudicated mentally defective" or who has been 'committed to a mental institution" from owning or possessing a firearm".

"A written plea of not guilty was filed in this cause prematurely before formal charges were filed", a document filed Thursday said.

The Florida Education Association on Thursday asked Scott to veto the measure, saying more than 200,000 school employees could qualify to carry firearms, which would "do more harm than good".

It also raises the age for buying a rifle to 21.

Besides his objections to arming teachers, Scott was on record as being opposed to extending Florida's existing three-day waiting period for handgun sales to purchases of all firearms, as the new law now does. "If we want to prevent future atrocities, we must look for solutions that keep guns out of the hands of those who are a danger to themselves or others, while protecting the rights of law-abiding Americans", Chris W. Cox, executive director of the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action, said in a statement.

President Donald Trump has voiced support for arming teachers and so has the NRA. Many Republicans in both the House and the Senate supported that position and voted against the bill, but the bill passed on bipartisan votes in both chambers and majority of Republicans voted for it. Survivors were split as well.

Andrew Pollack, whose daughter Meadow was one of the 17 killed, called on other states to follow Florida's lead. "We're going to learn and continue to make this state a better place".

He stood before a judge to hear the new charges against him - an additional 17 counts of attempted first-degree murder, the result of a grand jury indictment filed Friday.

The Public defender made it known early on that Cruz will accept responsibility and plead guilty to the crimes in exchange for prosecutors agreeing not to seek the death penalty against him.
