Barrie went from having the lowest unemployment rates in the country just a few months ago to one of the highest in February. The jobless rate has only fallen to 5.8 per cent twice during that time, once in 2007 and again in December.
StatsCan also reported that the utilization of manufacturing capacity is now at 86.1 per cent, the highest reading since the peak year of 2000. In January 2017, the state's unemployment rate was 5.2%.
Nationally, the Canadian economy added 15,400 jobs last month and the jobless rate fell one notch, to 5.8 per cent.
Statistics Canada's latest labour force survey, released Friday, also found that the job gains in February were driven by an increase of 50,300 in public-sector jobs. However, the industry with the majority of minimum-wage earners - accommodation and food services - continued to add jobs for the second consecutive month. But economists say the positive labour market signs will not be enough for the Bank of Canada to raise interest rates.
Wagamama fined for failing to pay the minimum wage
A Wagamama statement said the company has always paid minimum wage and makes sure that staff receive 100 per cent of their tips. The government has also committed 35 million US dollars for minimum wage enforcement in 2017 to 2018.
According to the Bank of Canada's calculations, the national and productivity accounts showed wage inflation below the labour-force survey's 3.1 per cent growth. The city's unemployment rate is up to 8.4 per cent from eight per cent year-over-year, as more people continue to participate in the workforce, which reflects those either working or looking for work, up to 66 per cent from 65.7.
"This is about as close to neutral a jobs report can get inCanada ..." Average hourly wages for permanent employees rose by 3.1 percent from last February, down from the 3.3 percent year-over-year increase in January.
The province gained a total of 2,300 jobs compared to last month.
