South Korea, world brace for trade protectionism
Chinese President Xi Jinping (R) meets with Chung Eui-yong, national security advisor for the President of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Moon Jae-in and also special envoy of Moon, in Beijing, capital of China, March 12, 2018.
The South Korean President has reportedly made his statement while in a weekly meeting with senior secretaries.
China, which appears to have been left on the sidelines as South Korea has orchestrated the rapprochement with the North, attempted to take partial credit for the developments over the weekend.
The U.S. "maximum pressure" strategy aimed at severely restricting Pyongyang's hard currency earnings through harsh worldwide sanctions has made China increasingly uneasy. "Those are the kinds of things that we can share publicly about him and Trump is now committed to having at least a first conversation", Pompeo said in response to a question. That proposal turned to reality last week as Kim Jong-un stepped out of his Hollywood-style villain character, regaling South Korean officials in Pyongyang with sumptuous food and drink, all the while cracking self-deprecating jokes. But Deputy White House spokesman Raj Shah said on Sunday that no additional conditions are being stipulated.
"President Trump isn't doing this for theatre". Why would Kim speak up while his prospective negotiating partner is getting tenderized by his own nation's media in advance of the summit?

There is still a great deal of uncertainty but there is now hope that was not there before.
South Korea's minister for trade, Kim Hyun-chong, who has visited the United States twice in recent weeks to seek ways to minimize the damage to South Korean steelmakers, will depart for the U.S. again on Tuesday, a ministry spokeswoman said.
Chung thanked China for its important leading role in helping with positive changes on the Korean Peninsula, and said the ROK is willing to have close coordination with China to maintain the current momentum on the Peninsula. Well, what are they? An estimated 30,000 defectors now live in South Korea. With Trump's brash nature and lack-of-tact, this may be Kim's flawless opportunity to achieve this, since Trump would love anything that seems like a win (and really, this would be a major win for the Trump administration if he were to achieve this).
North and South Korea agreed to hold working talks to hammer out the details of the inter-Korean summit, but have not officially spoken since the South's delegation returned last week, Baik said.
Kim Jong-un has said that he wants to speak with Trump about deeper cooperation with the United States of America and Trump specifically.
China looked forward to smooth talks between the two Koreas and between the United States and North Korea and substantive progress in the denuclearisation process and normalisation of ties, Xi added.
