Shock Ebola outbreak in Congo - 10 new cases suspected and two confirmed

Democratic Republic of Congo

At least 17 people have died in an area of northwestern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) where health officials confirmed an outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus.

A source in the central African country's ministry of health said more details would be provided in a formal announcement later today. It said of the five samples sent to the National Institute of Biological Research in Kinshasa, two came back positive for Ebola.

Since that time, no deaths have been reported among those hospitalised or among health workers treating the ill, it said.

Symptoms of the virus include fever, severe headache, muscle pain, unexplained hemorrhage (bleeding or bruising), abdominal pain, vomiting, fatigue, and diarrhea, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

"WHO is closely working with other partners, including Médecins Sans Frontières, to ensure a strong, response to support the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to prevent and control the spreading of the disease from the epicentre of iIkoko Iponge Health Zone to save lives", said Dr Allarangar Yokouide, WHO Representative in the DRC.

Hoping to cease the unfold of Ebola to surrounding provinces and global locations, the World Health Organization additionally launched $1 million from a contingency fund to help its actions for the following three months.

Further downstream the river flows past Democratic Republic of Congo's capital Kinshasa and Brazzaville, capital of neighbouring Congo Republic - two cities with a combined population of over 12 million people.

An effective response to the 2017 EVD outbreak was achieved through the timely alert by local authorities of suspect cases, immediate testing of blood samples due to strengthened national laboratory capacity, the early announcement of the outbreak by the government, rapid response activities by local and national health authorities with the robust support of worldwide partners, and speedy access to flexible funding. Congolese authorities approved the use of an experimental new vaccine but did not deploy it during last year's outbreak that killed four people.
