US Senate to Vote to Reinstate Internet Neutrality

12 May 2018, 01:41 | Ross Houston

Election season is great time to debate net neutrality in America

FCC defends repeal as net neutrality deadline draws near

The setting of the date comes as Democrats in the Senate drafted a petition to force a vote on restoring the net neutrality rules.

The senators are putting forward the resolution on Wednesday under what's known as the Congressional Review Act, a law that permits Congress to review - and reject - administrative decisions by federal agencies.

In a later tweet, Markey said: "Next week, when we force a vote on my resolution to save #NetNeutrality, every senator will have to go on record on how they see the internet: a dynamic, diverse, democratic space that fosters innovation, or just another market for massive corporations to control". Susan Collins (R-Maine), but still requires one more vote to pass-could come as early as next Wednesday. Its expedited process and low bar to entry - only 30 senators are needed to bring a vote, and the vote generally happens quite quickly - have made it an ideal tool for Congress to undo Obama-era regulations, but the shoe is on the other foot now.

The US Senate will vote on whether to kill or keep net neutrality at some point before June 12. The FCC formally repealed the rules - which were imposed by the federal agency of a different makeup in 2015 - in December of previous year, after months of wild protests.

That's why tech companies are urging users to pressure House members in an effort to convince GOP lawmakers that saving net neutrality might be a very good survival strategy for the fall's midterm elections.

"Americans do not want access to the internet to look like access to cable channels, where ISPs set up paid schemes to prioritize some websites and services over others". And if it passes the House, the legislation would still need Trump's signature ― no sure thing, given that he put Pai in the position to lead the push overturning the Obama-era net neutrality rules.

The Senate will vote to try to block the death of net neutrality, but at this point it would take a miracle.
With the prolonged absence of Senator John McCain due to illness, proponents believe they will win on a 50-49 vote. The Senate is likely to vote next week.

Pai said the Internet Freedom Order will replace net neutrality rules with strengthened transparency requirements to protect consumers. A group of 23 states has already filed suit against the federal government to prevent the rollback of net neutrality rules, and even if that fails, some state and local governments are considering their own net neutrality bills.

"I can not think of an issue that polls so decisively on one side", said Sen.

Following the FCC's repeal of the Open Internet Order last December, Senate Democrats have been working with open internet advocates by holding meetings around the United States with the hope of rallying grass-roots support.
