World champion Lewis Hamilton hailed a potential turning point in his season after victory in Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix extended his lead over Formula One title rival Sebastian Vettel to 17 points.

Hamilton had a lap of 1 minute, 16.173 seconds at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, only four hundredths of a second ahead of Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas.

Britain's Lewis Hamilton drove his Mercedes to victory in Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix for his second victory of the season.

The Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo followed their lead.

McLaren's Fernando Alonso and Renault's Carlos Sainz Jr split the two Haas's, qualifying eighth and ninth respectively.

The pilot "Mercedes" Lewis Hamilton became the victor of the Grand Prix of Spain at circuit the Catalunya in Barcelona.

While Hamilton pulled away cleanly at the start, and Vettel passed Bottas into the first corner for second place, there was carnage behind as Romain Grosjean spun his Haas in a cloud of smoke.

For the first time this season, he felt truly at one with the auto.

"This year, for example, the track, they put new asphalt last winter so it's still a challenge for all of us to understand the best set-up and how you get around this new track, he explained".

However, Hamilton poured cold water on any hope of a Ferrari win by putting the hammer down and leaving Vettel in the dust while the German came under pressure from Bottas. Since then they have struggled, largely with optimising the tyre temperature operating window but in Barcelona it clicked perfectly, especially for Hamilton who finished 20 seconds up the road from his team-mate.

Yet Mercedes signed him to another one-year contract in September to remain with the team through the 2018 season. We've got some work to do overnight.

Toro Rosso's Pierre Gasly and Renault's Nico Hulkenberg were unsighted and could do little to avoid the Frenchman. Meanwhile, Sauber driver Charles Leclerc will start 14th tomorrow, sandwiched between the Force India cars with Esteban Ocon in 13th place and Sergio Perez in 15th.

"It felt that I had a lot more pace all through the race", he said.

The Frenchman lost control of his Haas auto at Turn 3 and continued to push on his accelerator as he spun. All three cars suffered heavy damage and the race was immediately brought under the control of the safety vehicle.

"We can improve, I know there's a little bit more in the vehicle and a little bit more in me if I get everything together".

New Zealander Brendon Hartley of Toro Rosso was not among the runners following his huge accident at the end of final practice, which left the rear end of his vehicle wrecked after spinning into the barriers at high speed.

Vettel agreed, but then with the Saturday sweeties to come, he is never overly troubled by Friday's returns "It has been a tricky day with the tyres".
