The campaign cast the protests as a "reignition" of the Poor People's Campaign, the 1968 movement started by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and others to challenge racism, poverty and militarism.

"Even here in Sacramento, the gentrification of our cities (is) pushing poor and working people out of them", the 71-year-old actor said.

All across the country people gathered at state capitol buildings for the national event. They had scheduled protests at state capitols across much of the eastern United States on Monday, according to their website.
