Amazon Go to open in Chicago and San Francisco, expanding cashier-less store footprint
The company's experimental, cashier-less grocery store - Amazon Go - is slated to open one of its two new locations in the Second City, CNNMoneyconfirmed early this morning.
The ecommerce retailer opened its first Amazon Go location in Seattle in January. In response, Amazon's vice president said this move "forces us to question our growth here".
The actual Amazon Go store is extremely tech-heavy, was expensive to build and can only sell a narrow range of specially-selected items - nowhere near the 50,000 or so items a typical supermarket stocks. They can grab whatever they need, from sandwiches, drinks, or any other food off of the shelves, and simply walk out the store without stopping to pay. Overhead cameras keep track of what a customer buys and charges them after they leave, the Tribune said. Now, it has posted listings for store managers in San Francisco and Chicago, according to The Seattle Times. As many as six stores could open this year, according to Recode. In addition to its own selection of food available for purchase online and the Amazon Fresh grocery delivery service, Amazon owns Whole Foods. No checkout is required; people are charged for the items they take shortly after leaving the store.

While the stores are notable for the lack of cashiers and a futuristic experience, there are employees on site for food preparation and other tasks. When they pull an item of the shelf, it's added to their virtual cart. The store, which opened to the public on Monday, allows shoppers to scan their smartphone with the Amazon Go app at a turnstile, pick out the items they want and leave.
The app uses the same types of technologies used in self-driving cars: computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning.
