Bad weather and dust made observation hard, according to the TV channel.

Muslims observe Ramadan by fasting during sunlight hours - eating a pre-dawn meal called the suhoor, and breaking the fast at dusk with the iftar. This year, Ramadan is expected to begin on Wednesday, May 16, 2018.

The holy month begins with the sighting of the new moon based on the Islamic lunar calendar, after which the religious authorities of Muslim majority countries will declare the start of Ramadan.

Since the moon has not been sighted in the Middle East, experts are firm that the crescent would neither be visible today in the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe.

Islamic scholars are firm that if the Ramadan moon is sighted in most parts of the Middle East today, then it would be viewed in Southeast Asia, South Asia and the Indian subcontinent tomorrow.

Ramadan is said to be a holy month during which period the prophet Muhammad says the doors of hell are firmly sealed and the doors to heaven are wide open.

US President Donald Trump today greeted Muslims observing Ramadan and said the holy month is a time of self-reflection meant to deepen one's spiritual growth.

Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five obligatory pillars of Islam, along with the Muslim declaration of faith, daily prayer, annual charity - known as "zakat" - and performing the Hajj pilgrimage in Makkah. Otherwise the holy month will begin on Thursday, May 17.

On the day, Muslims attend a special prayer in the morning at outdoor locations or mosques.

Note that on the last day of Ramadan, which is Eid al-fitr, the greeting changes to "Eid Mubarak".
