YouTube launching a new music streaming service on May 22
YouTube Music will cost $9.99 a month, and - this is a surprise given past speculation - the new service will still sit alongside Google Play Music for now, rather than replacing it.
There is both an ad-supported free tier and a $9.99-per-month package called YouTube Music Premium.
The new YouTube Music app on Android.
This new music streaming service is set to launch 22 May, with the US, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and South Korea getting the platform first and other countries, including the United Kingdom, set to get it in the "coming weeks".
Subscribers to Google Play Music get YouTube Music Premium added to their subscription without additional cost. The current YouTube Red offerings - getting rid of all the ads, access to YouTube's Original shows like Cobra Kai, offline and background playback - are going to be a $2 add-on on top of the required $10/month YouTube Music subscription.
The streaming service will have two versions, ad, and subscription. The days of jumping back and forth between multiple music apps and YouTube are over.
In addition to millions of official songs, other content includes thousands of playlists, artist radio, remixes, covers, and live versions. "For the first time, all the ways music moves you can be found in one place".
YouTube Music, a new subscription streaming service, will launch on May 22
YouTube Music will launch in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and South Korea next week (although, in South Korea, the service will only offer the YouTube Premium membership, not YouTube Music Premium). Perhaps preempted by the numerous leaks, YouTube made a decision to just go ahead and announceYouTube Music and YouTube Premium before Tuesday's launch.
YouTube Music will be a new app, for mobile and desktop, and service specifically designed for play music (and music videos).
YouTube Music will come with extra features like personalised playlists based on individual's YouTube history and other usage patterns. At the airport? We'll recommend something relaxing before the flight.
According to Google, YouTube Music will be for those looking for music, not just to listen to but also watch, making use of YouTube's extensive music video collection. It's also worth noting that the YouTube Music will only remove ads from music videos and not the YouTube Originals. It will expand more broadly in the coming weeks.
Google's been amassing a new team to take on the music industry, from streaming competitors like Spotify to the record labels that control what music can appear on what platforms and how.
