Ukraine Denies Paying Trump Lawyer for White House Meeting

Donald Trump lawyer Michael Cohen'paid $400k to set up meeting with Ukrainian President

After Trump won, Poroshenko moved to strengthen ties with the Trump administration, with the Ukrainian leader attending a meeting with him a year ago and holding a news conference in front of the White House.

Citing sources close to those involved, the BBC said the payment was set up by people acting on behalf of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. Further, Cohen was not a registered as an agent for Ukraine, which would have been required by USA law.

He wanted to open a so-called back channel to Trump because Ukrainian lobbyists in Washington could arrange only a brief photo opportunity and handshake.

Just as it has been clear that former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort was a target for flipping against Trump, Cohen's fate seems to revolve around whether he might be pressured into taking a deal, like Freidman was.

The meeting at the White House was last June.

"Poroshenko's inner circle was shocked by how dirty this whole arrangement", one source tells the BBC.

There is no indication Trump knew about the payment.

It's been revealed President Trump's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, received a secret payment of nearly $600,000 to fix talks between the US President and his Ukrainian counterpart.

A longtime business associate of Trump lawyer Michael Cohen has arranged a plea deal for himself to avoid a lofty prison sentence, and he is now working with the Special Prosecutor's office.

His lawyers are due in federal court in Manhattan next week for a conference with the judge overseeing review of the evidence seized by the United States in the raid.

Avenatti obtained an SAR detailing the corporations' payments. NY medallions, valued at over $1 million apiece as recently as 2014, now sell for about $120,000-mostly through bankruptcy and foreclosure sales. The law included criminal penalties but is not always aggressively enforced.

And Poroshenko was unsure until the last minute how much time and access he would have to the president, the BBC reported, noting Ukrainian officials were furious with Cohen, questioning if they paid him and he was unable to deliver.

The President's lawyers are already resigned to the strong possibility that the inquiry into Mr Cohen's businesses could lead him to cooperate with federal prosecutors.

After the story was published, Poroshenko's office ripped the claims as "blatant lie, slander, and fake". This is how we assess the misinformation that the meeting of the presidents of Ukraine and the United States was allegedly organized for money.

Cohen's lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Giuliani, who met with Poroshenko in Ukraine late a year ago, said he did not know anything of such payments to Cohen and said he was still getting caught up on the story.
