The National Hurricane Center in Miami said at 2 p.m. EDT Monday that Alberto was centered about 30 miles (50 kilometers) south-southwest of Panama City, Florida. With maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour, Alberto was moving north at 9 miles per hour. Isolated tornadoes were also possible over parts of Georgia and southeast Alabama. It is expected to produce 6-15cm of rain from Alabama northward into the southern Great Lakes and from north Florida into the southern Appalachians through Thursday.
"Given the short period of time before Alberto makes landfall, its overall ragged appearance, and proximity to dry air, little change in strength is expected before the subtropical storm reaches the coast", said John Cangialosi, a hurricane specialist at the hurricane center.
The storm formed and was named a subtropical storm on Saturday.
