Harvey Weinstein Pleads Not Guilty To Rape & Sexual Misconduct Charges

Harvey Weinstein Arraigned On Rape And Criminal Sex Act Charges

The Hollywood producer appeared in court in NY after he was charged last month with two counts of rape and one of a criminal sexual act for alleged incidents involving two separate women in 2004 and 2013.

He was ordered to remain in NY state or CT.

On Tuesday, Brafman indicated Weinstein is ready to proceed with a robust defense.

The accusations, first reported by the New York Times and the New Yorker previous year, gave rise to the #MeToo movement, in which hundreds of women have publicly accused powerful men in business, government and entertainment of misconduct.

The most serious of the charges against Weinstein, first-degree rape, carries a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison under NY law.

The Guardian reports that Weinstein walked into the Manhattan court "with a limp, looking pale and taking in his surroundings".

He has denied all of the allegations. And as awful a crime as rape is, it is equally reprehensible to be falsely accused of rape.

Weinstein, the onetime Tinseltown powerbroker whose films earned dozens of Oscars, was charged with rape and another sex crime in NY late last month, almost eight months after the first public allegations against him surfaced. He faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted of either offence.

Anyone following the Weinstein scandal will also remember that actress Mira Sorvino accused the powerful producer of misconduct dating back to TIFF in 1995, as she detailed to the New Yorker.

Weinstein was charged on May 30, 2018.

Though there have been multiple allegations against Weinstein, he was indicted by a grand jury for assaults against two women: Lucia Evans and an unnamed woman.

"It's long overdue for him to face this", said Gloria Allred, an attorney who represents women accusing men of sexual harassment, told reporters outside the court.

Prosecutors from the Manhattan district attorney's office reportedly met privately with another woman on Monday after she and two other plaintiffs filed a lawsuit against Weinstein.

He has reportedly spent months in treatment for sex addiction.

Since the revelation of Weinstein's alleged wrongdoing, he has been stripped of his membership with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Science, whilst being discharged as CEO of the Weinstein Company, his once credible production studio.

London's Metropolitan Police and Los Angeles prosecutors have said they are reviewing accusations of sexual assault against him.
