The groups are calling on the president to lift recent tariffs on aluminum and steel imports as well as the proposed tariffs on other imports from China.

American pork producers, for whom Mexico is the largest export market, were dismayed by the move.

The U.S. tariffs have been condemned by nations across the world, with Canada last week announcing it will impose tariffs on as much as C$16.6 billion ($12.8 billion) of U.S. steel, aluminum and other products from July 1.

The U.S. tariffs went into effect after negotiations with Mexico and Canada to redraw the North American Free Trade Agreementhit snags over content rules for the auto industry, and over controversial U.S. demands to eliminate dispute settlement mechanisms in the pact and introduce a so-called sunset clause under which Nafta would expire in five years unless explicitly renewed by its members. China has vowed to retaliate on everything from US soybeans to airplanes, and Beijing has said it will abandon its commitments if the usa follows through on its tariff threat.

Canada said proportional duties would be imposed on United States steel, aluminium and consumer goods from July 1, while Brussels is also preparing tariffs on USA products including bourbon, motorcycles and blue jeans.

He recommended reducing imports to a level that would "enable US steel mills to operate at 80 percent or more of their rated production capacity".

Xi's government is open to entering into legal contracts to obtain about an additional $25 billion in goods from the USA this year, according to the people. The list also includes motorboats.

"This is a gut punch to Virginia farmers, who exported more than $68 million in pork to Mexico previous year".

The decision not to extend the exemption led to accusations that the president was triggering a trade war which could hit economies around the globe, including that of the US.

Additionally, Mexico's foreign ministry blasted the US tariffs as "unjustified, unilateral measures".

Three groups that are under the network's umbrella - Americans for Prosperity, the Libre Initiative, and Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce - announced Monday they are launching a multi-year, multi-million dollar campaign to promote the benefits of free trade and opposing tariffs.

The lawmakers were trying to draft a narrowly focused bill that would require a vote in Congress to approve tariffs when the administration claims they're needed for national security, as it did for those on steel and aluminum from the top US allies.

Last week however, United States commerce secretary Wilbur Ross said the U.S. had made insufficient progress with its allies to reduce America's trade deficit, and lifted the waiver. Canada has also strongly objected to the metals tariffs.

Trudeau was also asked about possible concessions the seeking in the NAFTA talks.
