The satellites will provide pay-TV operators the reliability and scalability to elevate viewing experiences by adding more content and delivering higher-quality picture quality to address the ever-increasing audience demand for high definition (HD) and Ultra HD content.

It can help provide with Internet services to mobile operators, passengers on airplanes, cruise liners, as well as remote areas that are still without reliable connections.

SES-12 will operate in the Ku and Ka-bands with a total of 76 active transponders and eight antennas.

The SES-12 satellite is able to carry more communications payloads because it carries very little of the chemical fuel most spacecraft use to maneuver and hold their positions.

Built by Airbus Defense and Space, SES-12 combines features that would have required two spacecraft just a few years ago, Halliwell said, providing direct-to-home television and other communications services through six beams covering an enormous area with multiple customizable beams providing broadband connectivity and data relay.

SpaceX will not attempt to recover the first stage-the rocket will instead fall into the ocean.

SpaceX was originally planning to send two private tourists on a trip around the moon sometime this year. It is expected to enter service in late January or early February. The good side of all this is it actually extends our (on orbit) life capability from 15 to 22 years.

Monday's launch was delayed three days so SpaceX could perform more tests on the Falcon 9's upper stage, which was the newer Block 5 version. Following separation from the launcher, the satellite has completed its initialisation phase and has started electric orbit raising (EOR) operations as planned.

"This is one of the largest, if not the largest satellites we've launched", he said.

This is actually confirmation of something we already more-or-less knew.
