Lava from Kilauea volcano destroys Hawai'i County mayor's home

Lava from Kilauea volcano destroys Hawai'i County mayor's home

About 500 homes were in the direct path of the lava, and hundreds of homes in the Kapoho Beach Lots and Vacationland communities were destroyed, the County of Hawaii Civil Defense told ABC News.

County Managing Director Wil Okabe said his own vacation home in Kapoho Beach Lots was also threatened.

Another three-dozen homes were confirmed destroyed this past weekend when a large lava stream creeping 6 miles (9.7 km) across the landscape reached the far eastern edge of the Big Island, pouring into the ocean at a place called Kapoho Bay.

Mounting property losses were reported a day after five or six people who initially chose to stay in the newly evacuated Kapoho area after road access was cut off were rescued by helicopter, according to the Hawaii County Civil Defense agency. These were vacation homes and rentals, as well as primary residences.

Civil defense officials said Kapoho Bay itself had been filled in with lava that extended seven-tenths of a mile from what had been the shoreline. Lava has inundated most of Vacationland and has covered all but the northern part of Kapoho Beach Lots.

Numerous homes in the upscale gated community of Kapoho Beach Lots were valued at several million dollars each. "Nothing stops it and the direction it goes", Magno said of the lava flow.

"I left a lot of things behind because I didn't want to feel as if I was abandoning my home", Rahmer said.

That would more than double the 117 homes that have been confirmed as destroyed during the ongoing eruption. Laze is formed when hot lava hits the ocean, reacts with sea water and sends hydrochloric acid and steam with fine glass particles in the air.

The lava flow has covered about 7.7 square miles of the island, according to the USGS.

She reminisced about taking her daughter to swim in the ocean for the first time in a local swimming spot known as Champagne Ponds.

"Harry had a premonition this was going to happen", Snyder said. Police said a 55-year-old man was arrested last week after he circumvented a traffic checkpoint and crashed his vehicle into a hardened lava flow.
