Mitch McConnell Cancels Senate's August Recess

Mitch McConnell Cancels Senate’s August Recess, Blames Dems: ‘Historic Obstruction’

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) canceled the month-long August recess Tuesday because of the "historic obstruction by Senate Democrats of the president's nominees" and their failure to pass appropriations bills.

McConnell, R-Ky., said he made a decision to shorten the usual summer getaway "due to the historic obstruction by Senate Democrats of the president's nominees" and to work on must-pass spending bills.

"Due to the historic obstruction by Senate Democrats of the president's nominees, and the goal of passing appropriations bills prior to the end of the fiscal year, the August recess has been canceled", McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, said in a released statement, with an exception for the first week of the month.

"McConnell doesn't want the PR nightmare of dozens of negative town halls in August".

Asked if his shortening of the recess was aimed at pressuring Democrats to halt delaying tactics against Trump's nominees, McConnell showed no willingness of reviving the break if the pace of nominations quickens.

In a move Democratic U.S. Sen.

Nevertheless, for senators hoping to take a break, there's still hope.

The Senate will now recess for one week in August instead of four, McConnell said. "We assume he'll be here in Washington working right alongside us".

The additional workweeks in August mean that endangered Democratic senators on the ballot this year will face a dilemma: Stay in Washington and attend to Senate business during time they could otherwise use to campaign back home or remain in their states and face criticism that they are shirking their responsibilities in government.

"Given the urgency of these weeks, we presume he won't be jetting off to Bedminster or Mar-a-Lago or spending countless hours on the golf course, given the pain his policies have caused the middle class, particularly on health care".

Though the move affects all senators, it hits Democrats especially hard. I think, you know, that's pretty petty.
