Over the course of the first lady's recovery, the White House released little information about the status of her health or where she was beyond telling reporters she was "doing well". But doctors on cable news expressed surprise at her extended stay in hospital for a treatment that is usually carried out in a day.

President Trump on Wednesday lashed out at the news media, whom he accused of falsely reporting "vicious" stories about his wife during a more than three-week stretch in which first lady Melania Trump did not hold or attend any official events.

On Monday night, the first lady made her first White House appearance when she attended a private event to honor Gold Star families. "All Fake, she is doing really well!"

She is due to make her first appearance before the media in weeks on Wednesday.

She and the president recently attended an event for Gold Star families, a memorial created to honor and "pay tribute to our fallen heroes".

On the other hand, Trump has long spread conspiracy theories on a wide range of topics.

The "Morning Joe" hosts have feuded with Trump in the past, criticizing a number of his moves as president.

"I agree that it would be "vicious" and "unfair" to lie about a loved one having a facelift for the goal of causing pain and embarrassment", Scarborough tweeted Wednesday, adding, "can you imagine anyone would be so cruel to do such a thing?" Mr. President, can you imagine anyone would be so cruel to do such a thing?

Last weekend it was announced Melania would not be joining her husband at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland. Several reporters, though, did.

Trump's attack on Brzezinski previous year, in which he bashed her show's ratings and called her "low I.Q. Crazy Mika", prompted bipartisan denunciations at the time, with several Republican lawmakers calling it "beneath the dignity" of the White House and "not okay".

The president tweeted on Wednesday that Mrs. Trump was spotted by reporters in the West Wing heading to meetings, but those reporters failed to report the sighting because it would not fit a narrative she was "living in a different part of the world" or "was really ill".

"Fake news is really bad!" he said.
