Eagles Uninvited to the White House

At least two guests at President Donald Trump's event on Tuesday to highlight why Americans stand for the national anthem, which replaced the Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl LII ceremony, opted to take a knee as the "Star Spangled Banner" rang out across the South Lawn of the White House.

None of the Eagles players knelt during the playing of the anthem during the football season, but Trump brought up the anthem protests when he canceled the team's invitation on Monday after many players said they would not attend the celebration.

Eagles quarterbacks Nick Foles and Carson Wentz celebrate.

Last month, the NFL announced it would require athletes to stand during the national anthem in response to players who took a knee as protest to what some players see as the systemic oppression of people of color, including by police. Trump denounced the players as unpatriotic and repeatedly demanded an end to such protests. Staying in the Locker Room for the playing of our National Anthem is as disrespectful to our country as kneeling.

News of the cancelled event sent off a firestorm through Twitter, with everyone reacting to President Trump's decision.

The acrimony continued on Tuesday, when the White House said "the vast majority of the Eagles team chose to abandon their fans".

However, some stood on the sideline with a raised fist while it played. It is not yet known how many players meant to make the trip.

Eagles officials declined comment on the White House version of events, sticking with a simple earlier statement: "We are truly grateful for all of the support we have received and we are looking forward to continuing our preparations for the 2018 season".

"I know no matter who wins this series, no one wants the invite [to the White House] anyways", he said. But it may also be that a large number of players simply weren't going to show up. "The President continues to spread the false narrative that players are anti-military".

President Donald Trump has held a "patriotism" event at the White House in lieu of a Super Bowl celebration for the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles that he canceled.

"You have to stand proudly for the national anthem", Trump said.

Meanwhile, arguably the greatest athlete of our time, Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James - who tweeted that Trump was a "bum" after Trump withdrew the invitation for the National Basketball Association champion Golden State Warriors previous year - struck back.

"I think the president has made it pretty clear he's going to try to divide us, all of us in this country, for political gain", Warriors coach Steve Kerr said Tuesday.

Trump's statement said there would be a "different kind of ceremony" in place of the traditional team visit. Alluding to the political disaster that unfolded in the Alabama US Senate race previous year after Republicans nominated Roy Moore, Trump said New Yorkers should vote for Donovan because the GOP "can't take any chances on losing to a Nancy Pelosi-controlled Democrat".
