Primaries in seven other states help set the political battlefield for November

Primaries in eight states ended Tuesday night, further setting the stage for the midterms this November, but some of the races won't be decided for a while.

After the election of President Donald Trump, California gained a special salience.

California's unusual primary system allows the top two primary candidates to advance to the general election, regardless of party.

Voters in seven other states went to the polls Tuesday.

How Blue Is New Jersey?

"So much for the big Blue Wave, it may be a big Red Wave", he added. But that seemed to be more of a typical presidential boast than a realistic analysis of the California results.

Cox is a California venture capitalist endorsed by President Trump who is most widely known for unsuccessfully running against Barack Obama for his Illinois Senate seat in 2003.

The election cued up the former mayor of San Francisco (and hair-gel power user), Gavin Newsom, for a leisurely stroll to the governor's mansion.

In the early 2000s he ran unsuccessfully for a string of offices in IL - U.S. House, twice for the U.S. Senate, and Cook County Recorder of Deeds, a job he wanted to see eliminated. There was also a gubernatorial primary last night.

If Democrats pick up only a seat or two - or even gain nothing - in the state and thus fail to win back the House, it would be a huge setback for Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's hopes of becoming speaker again and could lead to her ouster as the top Democrat in the House. Neither party immediately appeared to suffer major setbacks. In his speech on election night, the lieutenant governor described Cox as "a foot soldier in Trump's war on California". "Even Fake News CNN said the Trump impact was really big, much bigger than they ever thought possible", Trump wrote. "It's kind of sad when they tout it as a victory just to get a candidate on the November ballot".

"It wasn't Donald Trump who made California the highest tax state in the country", Cox told enthusiastic supporters.

The women got their matches done before rain arrived at Roland Garros , leaving the men's quarterfinals suspended in progress. The other match, featuring Angelique Kerber and Simona Halep , went to a third after the Romanian had a scrappy start.

Ivey, who stepped into the governor post after the resignation of Robert Bentley past year, will seek a full term in November.

Longtime Sen. Dianne Feinstein will square off with Democratic state Sen.

Republican John Cox, with 26% of the vote, defeated former LA Mayor Villaraigosa to advance to the finals in November. You know, there was this sort of panic among both the state and national parties in recent weeks that it could end up with two Republicans in some of these races.

In the primary races for the House of Representatives, several incumbent progressive representatives, including Ro Khanna and Ted Lieu easily came in first, and will likely be holding on to their seats.

New Mexico Democrat Deb Haaland got her party's nomination for the U.S. House of Representatives, making her the first Native American woman candidate for Congress.

Incumbent Republican Rep. Martha Roby was forced into a runoff, getting just 39 percent of the vote. She will face former Democrat Bobby Bright in Alabama's conservative 2nd district - where Trump loyalty has been a central issue. In South Dakota, Republican Kristi Noem became the first female nominee for governor in state history. The less than desirable outcome for her was seen as a rebuttal for her previous attacks on Trump after his crude comments on women was caught on tape. Bob Menendez, a Democrat who faced federal bribery charges past year. "This is a Democratic state".

Republican businessman Bob Hugin claimed the Republican nomination to face Menendez this fall. Darrell Issa is retiring; so is Ed Royce.

In two of the three Southern California districts, Democrats were coming in second place behind Republicans, but the races were too close to call early Wednesday, leaving Democrats at risk of being locked out. He notched about 30 percent in a large field, though the second-place finisher remained unclear.

And 48 percent of voters indicate they're more likely to support a congressional candidate who promises to provide a check on President Trump, compared with 23 percent who say they're less likely to support such a candidate.

But that scenario also didn't pan out in the race for attorney general, a position that has played a key role in California's resistance politics since Trump was elected.

The senate race in New Mexico brought arguably the least drama, as both party's candidate ran unopposed in the primaries.
