As the NTSB notes, eight seconds prior to the crash the Tesla was following a lead vehicle and traveling at around 65 miles per hour (104 km/h).

In the 18 minutes and 55 seconds prior to impact, the Tesla provided two visual alerts and one auditory alert for the driver to place his hands on the steering wheel.

Bystanders managed to get the driver out of the auto before it was engulfed in flames, and he was taken to hospital where he died from his injuries.

A Tesla SUV using the company's semi-autonomous Autopilot driving system accelerated just before crashing into a California freeway barrier, killing its driver, federal investigators have determined.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Huang complained to his family earlier that his 2017 Tesla Model X had attempted to veer into the barrier while on Autopilot before.

Seven seconds before impact, the Tesla began "a left steering movement", meaning it veered to the left. The vehicle's emergency braking and evasive steering did not engage.

The investigation is ongoing and could lead to the NTSB issuing new safety recommendations aimed at preventing similar accidents. A spokeswoman referred to a company blog saying that a Tesla with Autopilot is far safer than vehicles without it. The NTSB report confirms that, but does not speculate on how that affected the severity of the crash. However, the Tesla reported it was no longer following said vehicle four seconds before the accident. The report notes that the driver's hands were not on the steering wheel during the six seconds preceding the crash. In January, a Tesla Model S that may have been on autopilot hit a parked firetruck on Interstate 405 near Los Angeles.

A Tesla spokeswoman pointed to passages in the company's owners' manual warning that automatic emergency braking is created to reduce severity of a crash and isn't created to avoid a collision.

"Tesla Autopilot does not prevent all accidents - such a standard would be impossible - but it makes them much less likely to occur", the blog post reads. Autopilot was engaged and didn't brake for the truck as the driver was looking at her phone, according to police. But once the autopilot mode sensed that vehicle no longer was in front of the auto, the Tesla began accelerating, and continued speeding up until impact near the exit to State Highway 85. The driver in that crash sustained only minor injuries. "It is the driver's responsibility to drive safely and remain in control of the vehicle at all times", it says. Notably, the battery reignited five days after the vehicle had been towed to an impound lot.
