A Chinese government investigation has shed no light on why a USA diplomat fell ill at the consulate in Guangzhou after hearing mysterious sounds, an official said Thursday.

One path would be for the United States to suggest that the two countries conduct a joint investigation, they added.

The New York Times reported that at least two employees removed from China experienced unusual noises while there.

"Beijing has already conducted an investigation and dismissed concerns, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang saying last month, "[So] far, we have found no reason or clue for what was reported by the USA".

The upscale apartment complex in question is said to house U.S. government employees and other foreigners, as well as affluent Chinese dwellers. The team arrived earlier this week, and Nauert said the medical screenings were ongoing. Some were even peddling the idea that the attacks were an excuse to allow U.S. diplomatic personnel to quit their positions while still maintaining their pensions.

In May, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the symptoms experienced by the American worker evacuated from China in April were the same as those exhibited by diplomats in Cuba during testimony before the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

A U.S. official said the evacuated Americans are being brought for testing to the University of Pennsylvania.

In October, the U.S. State Department ordered non-essential embassy workers and their families to evacuate Havana out of concern the mysterious illness was the result of a targeted sonic attack.

"The medical screenings are ongoing for any personnel who have noted concerning symptoms or wanted baseline screening", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said on Wednesday, according to the Hill.

The State Department did not provide names or exact numbers, but Mark Lenzi, a Foreign Service officer, told the Washington Post that he and his family are among those being evacuated. That person reported abnormal sensations of sound and pressure before being diagnosed with a mild brain injury.

The Penn team said the patients from Cuba experienced persistent disability though rehabilitation therapy customized for them seemed to help. In response, it downsized the USA diplomatic staff in Havana and prohibited families from joining the diplomats who stayed.

She said China followed the Vienna convention to protect diplomatic staff of the USA and other countries.

But despite an investigation by the FBI that has lasted for more than a year, USA officials have been unable to determine the cause of the injuries, much less who the perpetrators might be.

Other researchers subsequently criticized the methods used in the study, saying that the neuropsychological evidence that the article presented was flimsy.

Beginning in 2016, at least 10 Canadian workers and 24 U.S. Embassy employees working in Havana, Cuba showed mysterious health symptoms related to unexplained sounds.
