GETTY Germany's car industry faces a crisis
German chancellor Angela Merkel has predicted hard talks at the G7 summit, and warned that she will not accept conclusions on issues like trade that water down the group's previous statements.
Chancellor Angela Merkel will face questions in parliament from lawmakers on Wednesday, the primary outing for a brand new format agreed by the governing coalition that took workplace in March.
"Of course I will try to speak with the American president on the current problems we have, especially with regard to Iran and with regard to trade tariffs", she said.
She also said she did not see any prospect of a strategic change in the G7's stance towards China, but that it was important to stress the need for reciprocity in opening markets. Lawmaker Hansjörg Müller asked if Merkel, who has been a strong critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, planned to engage more closely with Moscow.
The first question came from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which is now Germany's main opposition.
Mrs Merkel responded that the G7 is defined by its members' respect of global law and Russia's annexation of Crimea was a "flagrant breach" of that. She said Russia's removal was "unavoidable".
Paul Ryan contradicts Trump's claim that FBI planted a 'spy'
The statement specifically notes certain questions raised by Speaker Ryan, but does not disclose what these questions were. The FBI was looking into Russian interference in the U.S. election and that line of inquiry led them to Trump, he said.
She said Russia's readmission to such a format is not now feasible.
Just days before the G7 in La Malbaie, Quebec, begins on Friday, Merkel said Germany hoped to at least preserve the progress made at last year's summit.
German chancellors have not previously interacted directly with MPs in the same way British prime ministers do at their weekly question time.
AfD, however, sought to assail Merkel over the influx of more than a million migrants to Germany in 2015 and 2016.
Merkel said in Berlin Thursday that, as long as there is no fundamental United Nations reform, "we should, whenever a European member state gets a non-permanent United Nations seat. coordinate these seats Europe-wide and make them practically European seats".
