Gone but not forgotten

Their deaths our lives Learning from the suicides of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain

"Suicide doesn't discriminate", Lyn Morris, LMFT, Senior Vice President of Clinical Operations for Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services.

The Center for Disease Control has published research that shows a dramatic 25% increase in suicide rates since 1999. Suicide, Alzheimer's disease and drug overdoses are three leading causes of deaths with growing prevalence.

Anne Shuchat M.D.is principal director at CDC.

But we want to tell you - there is help available. Bourdain's death was also confirmed to be a suicide after his friend and fellow celebrity chef Eric Ripert found him unresponsive in his hotel room in France. With Kate Spade's own tragic suicide just days prior, we asked experts why a celebrity might take their own life.

Other symptoms include: making jokes about suicide, past attempts, withdrawal from personal life, fatigue, and sleepiness.

Suicide researchers already know a lot of the information in this new report, says Gebbia, "but the public doesn't".

Suicide rates were four times greater in the highest state compared with the lowest when calculated on an annual basis during the most recent time period, 2014 to 2016. Suicide rates were higher among males in Maryland, ranging from about 17 to 18 per 100,000 males.

The report says that in 27 states, 54 percent of people who died by suicide did not have a known mental health condition - however, they note that individuals may have had mental health problems that were never diagnosed.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday that suicides increased by 35 percent in MA between 1999 and 2016 - and a similar trend can be seen in almost every state.

Although suicide is often attributed exclusively to mental health conditions, it is rarely caused by a single factor, the researchers said.

"Life is worth living and the pain that comes from losing somebody prematurely can be unbearable", he said. "We don't think we can just leave this to the mental health system to manage".

The CDC recommends five steps to help someone at risk.

Since the year 2000, suicide rates in Louisiana have risen by more than 29 percent among both men and women.

Laura Marx of the Capital Region chapter of the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention says solving the problem starts with knowing the warning signs.

"The paper makes a clear case, correctly, about the fact that there is no one cause for suicide", he said, adding that "availability of means" makes death possible.
