Kroger said on Thursday the CDC and the FDA notified them that multiple illnesses have been reported in connection with this outbreak

Kroger said on Thursday the CDC and the FDA notified them that multiple illnesses have been reported in connection with this outbreak

So far, six cases have been reported in the state - as well as several other cases in Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and OH - in all regions of IL, the IDPH release stated. The cases have been reported in all regions of the state.

There is only one reported case related to this outbreak in OH thus far.

The includes melons you might buy in a fruit salad.

A multistate salmonella outbreak has been linked to cut melons, and most of the illnesses have been reported in MI and Indiana. The CDC said it is working to identify a common supplier that might be the original source.

On Thursday, Walmart and Kroger removed pre-cut melon linked to this outbreak from all the stores in the affected states, the CDC reported.

Walmart settled lawsuits in 2014 with the families of some of the 33 people who died of listeria infections traced to cantaloupes from Colorado that the retailer sold. The illness usually lasts four to seven days.

If you have purchased any fruit that may have been connected with the recall, the CDC is asking that you throw it away immediately.

The pre-cut melons have been removed from Walmart store shelves in IL. Whole melon is still OK to eat, the CDC said. Twenty-one people have been hospitalized.

While cut melons are the only ones linked to this outbreak, IDPH said people should remember some safety measures for consuming melons bought whole as well.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, Salmonella infections most often cause mild to severe gastroenteritis and severe invasive infections, both which are potentially life-threatening. Individuals who believe they may have become ill with Salmonella should contact their health care provider.

The investigation into the outbreak is expanding rapidly.
