Porsche's first electric vehicle will be called the Taycan
09 June 2018, 08:56 | Austin Hogan
Porsche Taycan is the name for the production Mission E
Porsche debuted the Mission E concept more than two years ago, but when the electric sports vehicle goes into production, it will feature a different name.
The Taycan has been dubbed the "Tesla-slayer" by some automotive journalists. The company has announced that their first ever EV will be called Porsche Taycan. Some of the spotted cars have been wearing exhaust exit surrounds that were fake and fitted to hide the car's identity.
The Taycan is expected to arrive in 2019 and start around $75,000. Automakers are spending billions as they face a period of unprecedented change - stricter environmental regulations are forcing them to offer more battery-powered vehicles even as combustion-engine cars still generate the vast majority of profits. It also plans a crossover version of the vehicle, as previewed by the Cross Turismo concept that made its debut at March's Geneva Motor Show. The Taycan will go on sale in 2019, offering a four-door alternative to the Tesla Model S. While final performance figures haven't been shared for the auto, Porsche is talking about a 0-62 miles per hour time of around 3.5 seconds.
The company also marked the occasion by revealing a 911 Speedster Concept, an open-top version of its iconic sports auto. Rather, it will ship under an entirely new name - the PorscheTaycan. Of the additional three billion Euros, some 500 million Euros will be used for the development of Taycan variants and derivatives, around one billion Euros for electrification and hybridization of the existing product range, several hundred million for the expansion of production sites, and around 700 million Euros for new technologies, charging infrastructure, and smart mobility. But the Taycan's floor-mounted batteries should give it an extremely low centre of gravity to allow for hunkered-down handling that's comparable with more focused performance machines.
