Suicide rates rising 'significantly' across America CDC reveals in new report

The rise in suicide rates was highest in the central, northern region of the USA, with North Dakota, for example, seeing a 57.6 percent increase since 1999. Its rate jumped a staggering 40.6 percent between 1999 and 2016, the years covered in the CDC report.

The CDC found that between 1999 and 2016, suicide rates rose by 25.4 percent nationally.

The Minnesota Health Department has increased efforts to identify at-risk communities to help reduce suicides.

Among those who committed suicide and who had known mental health conditions, 67.2% had a history of treatment for mental health or substance abuse conditions, and 54 percent were in treatment at the time of their suicide. In a subgroup of 27 states, including all six New England states, more than half the suicides in 2015 occurred among people with no known mental health condition.

Summers said the key takeaway from the report is that the entire country is experiencing greater suicide rates than in the past.

The CDC report cites several different approaches, such as working to stabilize housing and teaching coping and problem-solving skills early in life.

There were almost 45,000 suicides in 2016, the new government report showed.

She had struggled with depression and anxiety for years, according to a statement released by her husband, Andrew Spade. But that doesn't mean it is not a mental health issue, as CDC suggest by saying that is just one factor, that may mean it is a diagnosis issue. The CDC lists its own recommendations for policies, programs and prevention practices here, including strengthening economic supports to ease financial strains; creating protective environments where people live and work; and promoting connectedness in communities.

Utah recently passed legislation providing for better staffed, more effective 24-hour hotlines for those considering suicide or for people anxious about friends.

Suicide rates are up 31 percent over the last 15 years, and many employees, underpaid and overworked, are stressed.

"The mental health system, in a lot of ways, can feel like the power has been taken away, so one of those values in peer support is instead of a power imbalance, you're talking to someone who is going to be there with you and not tell you how to live your life but to explore options", Stohlmann-Rainey said.

While the study emphasizes the need for more prevention resources, predicting suicides can be hard.

Firearm ownership is common, and Delaney said "the literature is getting pretty strong" that states with easier access to guns have higher suicide rates.

Summers said those factors and "general stress about life" can become overwhelming to a person.

Extensively reported cases can make suicide seem to be more of "a viable option" if rich, famous people "who seem like they have it all" made that decision, said Theresa Buhse, associate executive director of the Long Island Crisis Center in Bellmore.

That means any public health effort to reduce suicides can't exclusively focus on those who have reached out for help.
