Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Saturday rejected a USA demand for a sunset clause in NAFTA but said he was prepared to compromise on the issue, which is holding up talks to update the 1990s-era pact. "We're gonna fix that situation, and if it's not fixed, we're not going to deal with these countries".

Trump last month directed Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross to initiate a national-security investigation into imports of cars, trucks and vehicle parts that could possibly lead to tariffs.

Trudeau's office responded to Trump's tweets with a statement.

After the summit in Quebec, Trump headed to Singapore, four hours earlier than originally planned, to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. "With that being said I think we'll probably easily make a deal". Trump has said he'll use the summit to argue that the other six nations are taking advantage of the United States on trade.

But Trump is provoking his fellow G7 leaders by calling for Russia's reinstatement in the group, after it was kicked out for invading Ukraine four years ago.

Trump also repeated an earlier proposal that USA trading partners should drop all trade barriers, including tariffs and subsidies to industries and producers in their own countries.

The American leader said a three-country deal would only be possible with substantial changes, and reiterated his interest instead in forming separate two-way trade accords with Mexico and Canada - an interest Canada has made clear it does not share.

Trudeau, who was walking on a path near the summit site with Argentinian President Mauricio Macri, declined to answer the questions.

Journalists traveling on Air Force One to Singapore with Trump had been told that the USA had chose to be part of the joint communique, which represented a minimal show of unity amid deep disagreements between Trump and the other six leaders over trade.

"PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, "US Tariffs were kind of insulting" and he 'will not be pushed around'".

Trump shocked the summit earlier today by calling for Russian Federation to be allowed to return to the G7 after it was kicked out in 2014 for invading Ukraine and annexing Crimea.

The president's sharp comments came as he is now en route to Singapore for a highly anticipated meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, set to be held on Tuesday. "We have a great relations", he continued, talking about Merkel, Macron and Trudeau by first name. "And so began a long litany of recriminations, somewhat bitter reports that the United States was treated unfairly, that the trading system was totally unfavourable to the United States, the American economy, American workers, the middle class", the official said.

Cranberries and rice are mostly imported from key states that voted for Trump in the 2016 election. He says "we're not looking to play games". Canada is focused on maintaining a trilateral pact, the official said.

"The president will continue to say what he says at various occasions", Trudeau said.
