Yellowstone National Park Superintendent Dan Wenk at the World War II Memorial on the Mall in Washington in 2015
Per a press release from the National Park Service, Kim Hancock of Santa Rosa was on a boardwalk with a group of people who, at one point, got within 30 feet of the bison; some in the group reportedly got as close as 15 feet.
Wenk said Yellowstone bison should be managed like wildlife rather than livestock and the herd's size should not be exclusively determined by ranchers who live outside the park in Montana.
Park officials have launched an investigation, but state that Hancock and other tourists had approached within 10 yards of the bison while walking on the boardwalk. It left the area immediately following the incident.
Hancock sustained a hip injury, but was in good condition after being transported to a nearby hospital, the park service said.
In early May, a bison rammed and slightly injured a woman in Yellowstone, officials said at the time.
Two people have been attacked by elks in recent days as well.

The Greater Yellowstone Coalition says it is "disappointed" about news that Dan Wenk is being forced out as Yellowstone National Park superintendent ahead of his planned March retirement date.
Rangers recommend park visitors stay at least 25 yards away from animals, and at least 100 yards away from bears and wolves.
Wenk spent more than four decades with the National Park Service and seven years in Yellowstone.
The Trump administration issued a stern reply to Yellowstone National Park superintendent Daniel Wenk, who had offered to retire next year in order to avoid a reassignment to Washington: Leave your post by August or retire now. Park officials aren't sure if it was the same elk.
Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke's office did not respond with a comment for this story but in a letter obtained by the Mountain West News Bureau, Interior Department officials said they are re-assigning Wenk to oversee National Parks in the D.C. metro area. "If you can't maintain these distances, turn around and find an alternate route".
