Trump says US won't sign G7 joint statement, leaving summit in chaos
"You end up with gradual escalation".
Trump infuriated his G7 allies recently by slapping them with the hefty tariffs on steel and aluminum - a move that prompted Canada and the European Union to threaten duties of their own.
"The action which Canada has objected to, and will continue to object to very strongly, was the illegal and unjustified imposition of tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum".
Outraged, the allies have responded by targeting American products, including cheese, bourbon and pork.
These tariffs, they told Trump, would hurt everyone.
"The Prime Ministersaid nothing he hasn't said before - both in public, and in private conversations with the President", it stated, adding that the Canadian government remains "focused on everything we accomplished here at the summit".
Following his announcement that the US would be pulling its endorsement of the joint statement, Trump took another jab at Trudeau in a second tweet.
"Looking forward to straightening out unfair Trade Deals with the G-7 countries". She took particular issue with Trump's previous claim that imports of Canadian steel and aluminum had made USA steel and aluminum plants unsustainable, thereby threatening national security. "As long as he's president, this is the approach we have to expect".
"No tariffs, no barriers, that's the way it should be, and no subsidies", he said, warning that other countries could lose access to the United States if they don't reduce trade barriers. The United States previous year posted a trade gap in goods and services of $101 billion with the European Union, $57 billion with Japan and $69 with Mexico.
Trudeau said his nation is insulted that Trump unilaterally imposed stiff tariffs on Canada for "national security" reasons.

Trudeau's view of how the summit went was a marked contrast to Trump's take. "And it's going to stop". He made first-name references to "Angela" and "Justin", and he repeatedly insisted he blamed previous U.S. leaders, not foreign ones, for what he sees as the global trade imbalance. "The EU trade surplus with the U.S.is $151 Billion, and Canada keeps our farmers and others out".
Economists and trade analysts note that the rules of world trade rules aren't as one-sided as the president argues.
On Sunday, Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland called the tariffs illegal and insulting.
Trump's comments on Saturday came shortly after Trudeau, who was hosting the G-7 meeting in Canada, had projected an image of cooperation. "Tariffs will come way down". The president offered no roadmap to a tariff-free world, and analysts greeted the proposal with skepticism.
Trump threatened at the meeting that the US would end all trade with nations that refuse to end "unfair" trade practices.
