Vettel regains championship lead with crushing Canadian GP win

German F1 driver Sebastian Vettel has claimed pole position at the Canadian Grand Prix with the fastest lap ever on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

This was far from the Mercedes' man's day, however, as the reigning champion, who qualified fourth, lost a spot to Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo following a pit stop inside the opening third of the race.

The race continued in its holding pattern, with the leading Vettel, second-placed Valtteri Bottas and Raikkonen in third preserving their tires to guarantee a one-stop strategy.

Vettel was well aware of the many Prancing Pony flags in the packed grandstands at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve as he kept the lead from pole position and coasted to victory on Sunday.

Stroll and Hartley's coming together saw the safety vehicle deployed but that was the extent of the drama.

Whilst Verstappen posted a 1:12.198 to go quickest ahead of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen and half a second up on Lewis Hamilton, there times were posted on the quicker Hypersoft, whilst Mercedes avoided using the tyre due to a limited supply.

Hamilton is looking to equal Schumacher's record of seven career Canadian GP wins.

Before the race on Sunday, the vehicle Villeneuve used in 1978 will be driven by his 47-year-old son Jacques, the 1997 world champion, to lead the ceremonial parade lap.

"I think they've waited long enough for Ferrari to do well here".

"We got pole today for a reason", said Vettel.

"With the start we had, with the race we had, there was nothing more we could do", said Bottas, who has finished second four times this season, but hasn't yet won.

But Bottas and Hamilton may have been set back by the team's inability to get an updated engine ready in time for the race, while Ferrari and Red Bull both had new parts.

The semi-permanent track combines long straights with tight chicanes and each team sets up their vehicle to maximize straight line speed, although the cars also need to deliver a good ride over the relatively tall curbs.

They should have new pieces for the next race June 24 in Le Castellet in France.

Räikkönen finished sixth, the Renault's of Nico Hülkenberg and Carlos Sainz in seventh and eighth.

Behind the leaders, there was chaos when Williams's Canadian Lance Stroll squeezed Toro Rosso's Brendon Hartley into the wall. He earned his first Formula One points with a ninth-place finish at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve past year. "We need to keep applying the pressure, we didn't this weekend but I'm really going to make sure we come back stronger at the next race".
