Talks with Trump are like sausages, says French President Macron: Report

FIFA World Cup French President Emmanuel Macron To Travel To Russia If France Reach The Semi-Finals

It was only six weeks ago when U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron grinned, laughed, and hugged their way through a state visit in Washington, showing all the signs of two leaders with a genuine friendship.

"No, he's happy", Trump said.

That wrestling cry would have been an apt announcement at the G-7 summit, what with the USA and other heads of state at each other's throats using the thrust and parry of rude remarks and social media to pummel each other.

The details of the conversation, which Axios previously reported, come amid fears of a looming trade war over the Trump administration's move to impose steep tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from the European Union, Canada and Mexico.

Aides to the president insist that the president is looking forward to the trip.

Those tensions boiled over during the G7 summit in Canada on Saturday, with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and European leaders reaffirming plans to institute retaliatory measures and Trump lashing out in response by refusing to endorse the group of industrialized nations' communique. In one photo, Xi and Russia's Vladimir Putin, with smiles on their faces, lead other world leaders to stride into a dining hall. In one picture, while the former U.S. president is seen engaging in talks with the experts, in the other picture he can be seen sharing a light moment with Angela Merkel with watching the European soccer match.

Then you carry your eyes toward the border of the picture and spot French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May.

In the USA version, we see Mr Trump face on, apparently calm, leaning back confidently with a sceptical, nearly sarcastic air, his arms crossed in a rebuff to the other leaders, bent towards him pleadingly.

Trump also predicts a positive outcome, emphasizing, his "good relationship" with "my friend" Macron, despite what he called "a little test" on trade. "As the Toronto Star wrote, "(Trump's) erratic, hostile behaviour toward the United States' traditional allies is undermining Washington's credibility around the world". "We will stand by them and anyone who would depart from them, once their back was turned, shows their incoherence and inconsistency", the statement said, according to Politico EU, which quoted a French publication.

On Saturday morning Trump said he was open to getting rid of the tariffs if the other countries agreed to a more pure form of free trade. Merkel thinks that it is better to set out those differences instead of giving a false impression of unity with a dishonest communique that would say everything's OK.

Trump made the comments in tweets from Air Force One as he headed to Singapore for his summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un. Trump will skip sessions on climate change and the environment.
