Meaningful vote rejected: how key MPs voted on the Brexit amendment
13 June 2018, 02:45 | Darnell Patrick
MPs will debate House of Lords amendments to the EU Bill head of a vote on Wednesday
The Government defeated the amendment by 324 votes to 298 after a late concession to a group of Tories led Dominic Grieve.
May had earlier warned that defeat would weaken her hand in exit talks, while a string of eurosceptic MPs stood up to accuse the rebels of trying to thwart Brexit. "I'm fairly confident we will be able to do that".
"In all conscience, I can not support the Government's decision to oppose this amendment because doing so breaches such fundamental principles of human rights and Parliamentary sovereignty". Yet now, with just hours to go before the parliamentary showdown, the Prime Minister looks as though she has brought her administration back from the brink.
Brexit Minister Steve Baker said the Government would "look very carefully" at the amendment, which is being tabled by former Cabinet Ministers Oliver Letwin and Nicky Morgan.
During Tuesday's debate, Ms Soubry told the House of Commons that a fellow Remainer MP had to be guarded by six armed undercover police officers at a recent public event.
Ministers had initially refused to even consider Grieve's amendment but moved to accept it at least in part, after whips signaled that the government were likely to lose in the Commons.
Asked on BBC Radio 4's Today programme what would happen under Government plans if MPs voted against the deal eventually secured by Mrs May, Mr Davis said: "If they throw it out, well, they throw it out".
MPs will on Wednesday debate a series of other amendments to the bill, which if passed, would seek to force May to change course and negotiate to stay inside a customs union and the single market after Brexit.
It is the legislation aimed at ensuring the United Kingdom has a smooth transition out of the EU. Lee, who voted for Britain to remain in the E.U.in the 2016 referendum, said in a statement he was "incredibly sad" to resign but did so in order to vote against the government's position on a key amendment to the bill. "That's what this House voted on Article 50".
The pound rose on Tuesday after British Prime Minister Theresa May saw off a rebellion in parliament over amendments to a bill for the country's exit from the European Union next year that had threatened to undermine her authority.
"However, facing the prospect of a humiliating defeat, Theresa May has been forced to enter negotiations with her backbenchers and offer a so-called concession".
"We will wait and see the details of this concession and will hold ministers to account to ensure it lives up to the promises they have made to Parliament".
The move represents a dramatic climbdown from Mrs May's original plan to offer MPs a "take it or leave it" vote to accept the withdrawal agreement or leave the European Union without a deal.
