President Donald Trump has repeatedly complained in recent days about Canadian tariffs on dairy products

President Donald Trump has repeatedly complained in recent days about Canadian tariffs on dairy products

The insults stemmed from a closing G7 press conference on Saturday in which Trudeau called United States steel and aluminum tariffs "insulting" and pledged to proceed with previously announced retaliatory tariffs.

Peter Navarro, one of President Donald Trump's top trade advisers, apologized Tuesday for saying over the weekend that there was "a special place in hell" for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

"My job was to send a signal of strength", he said.

Peter Navarro says his job was to send a "signal of strength" after Trudeau's post-G7 news conference sent the US president into a fit of pique that threw the summit into disarray.

"I used language that was inappropriate and basically lost the power of that message", he said.

The picture has since gone viral on the Internet, and Mr Trump raised it himself at the news conference after he was asked about his relationship with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

"I actually like Justin, you know, I think he's good, I like him, but he shouldn't have done that", Trump said.

Later during the show, Smith further said Trump's latest attitude towards Trudeau isn't a new thing and he has "been kicking allies in the teeth his whole presidency".

An escalating clash over trade between Washington and some of its closest global partners had loomed over Trump's historic summit meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday.

"That's going to cost a lot of money for the people of Canada".

Trump issued a statement on Tuesday in which he promised Trudeau's statements would end up costing Canada "a lot of money". And I say, 'Push him around?

The United States has alienated Canada and other allies by imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, arguing that they pose a threat to US national security. "I own that. That was my mistake, my words".

"Very dishonest and weak", he said.

The apology could ease tensions after Canada's parliament condemned the personal attack on Trudeau and as Canada's Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland gets ready to meet with members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday in Washington.

"Canada does have a very big advantage over us".

Other G-7 countries lobbied unsuccessfully at the summit for the United States to reverse its tariffs on imported steel and aluminium imports.

"Based on Justin's false statements at his news conference, and the fact that Canada is charging massive Tariffs to our U.S. farmers, workers and companies, I have instructed our U.S. Reps not to endorse the Communique as we look at Tariffs on automobiles flooding the U.S. Market!" the president tweeted.
