Julius Randle signs with the Pelicans to terrorize opposing frontcourts

03 July 2018, 11:19 | Pamela Mathis

Next up, Los Angeles had to figure out what to do with its biggest restricted free agent: Julius Randle.

The Lakers have renounced Julius Randle, making him an unrestricted free agent, league source tells ESPN. Randle is more of a ball-handler and off-the-dribble threat. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski was the first to report the news.

The Pelicans lost Rajon Rondo to the Lakers earlier on Monday.

He helped the team make it to the NBA Finals in 2008, when they won the NBA Championship.

LeBron James signs $154M deal with Lakers
Other than posting to his Instagram account, James did not issue a public statement after he was traded to the Lakers. James' camp and the Cavaliers' front office have maintained a dialogue since the season ended, sources said .

Now Rondo could potentially serve as a terrific mentor for Ball, who averaged 10.2 points, 7.2 assists and 6.9 rebounds as a rookie, but shot just 36 percent overall and 30.5 percent from 3-point range.

The Lakers have sought a veteran point guard to direct their offense for the better part of a year, after they traded D'Angelo Russell to the Brooklyn Nets on June 22, 2017. Would Los Angeles free up space to go get, say, DeMarcus Cousins, or put a major offer sheet in front of Clint Capela?

By putting a player option into the second year, Randle will have the ability to opt for free agency again next offseason if things don't exactly work out with Davis.

Randle averaged a career-high 16.1 points while also averaging 8.0 rebounds last season, playing in all 82 games. Prior to James' arrival, Turner Sports' David Aldridge reported that Randle was not interested in remaining in Los Angeles, which selected him with the seventh pick out of Kentucky in the 2014 National Basketball Association draft.
