A Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) source said that Najib was brought out of his residence at 3.07 pm by MACC personnel.

The Pekan MP, who resigned as Umno president and Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman after the coalition's defeat in the May 9 general election, is under investigation for suspected criminal wrongdoing in his brainchild 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), founded in 2009 as a sovereign vehicle to attract foreign investment into the country. In addition, the police have seized cash, handbags and jewelry valued at more than 1 billion ringgit as part of the investigation.

Mr Najib has always denied the corruption charges and had been cleared by Malaysian authorities while in power, but he is being investigated by several other countries.

It was reported that the producer who is a close friend of fugitive Low Taek Jho, the No 1 person-of-interest in the 1MDB probe had agreed to pay the U.S. government US$60 million (RM243 million) to settle a civil lawsuit that sought to seize assets allegedly bought with money stolen from a Malaysian state fund.

Malaysia's anti-graft agency also said Najib had been arrested, according to state news agency Bernama.

The 1MDB government task force this week said 408 bank accounts involving funds of almost 1.1 billion ringgit had been frozen.

Najib's arrest comes almost two months after his coalition's shocking defeat in a May 9 general election.

Earlier Malaysia's anti-corruption agency questioned Riza Aziz, the stepson of former premier Najib and a Hollywood film producer.

Riza was solemn as he arrived at the anti-graft office Tuesday and didn't speak to reporters. Red Granite in March agreed to pay the United States government $60 million to settle claims that it benefited from the 1MDB scandal.

Billions of dollars are unaccounted for from the fund, set up by Mr Najib. That includes real estate, art and proceeds from "The Wolf of Wall Street", which was directed by Martin Scorsese and starred Leonardo DiCaprio.
