The fire crossed over the Yolo county line and into Napa County, the site of devastating fires in late 2017, and sent smoke across the region.

According to the National Weather Service, smoke from the County Fire - formerly the Guinda Fire - spread west into Petaluma, and south into Oakland, San Francisco and down the Peninsula as far as Redwood City.

An update issued by Cal Fire shortly after 5:15 p.m. Saturday reported mandatory evacuations with 38 engines, 10 fire crews, 12 helicopters, seven bulldozers and eight water tenders already committed to the fire.

Scott McLean of the California Department of Forestry and Fire protection said the job of hand crews and bulldozer operators trying to cut containment lines was made more hard by high winds, which were blowing embers and starting new spot fires.

"It's going to be headed into some populated areas of small communities in the near future if it is not curtailed", Cal Fire spokesman Scott McLean said in an interview.

The fire grew overnight to 44,500 acres from 32,000 acres - more than the landmass size of San Francisco.
