In her viral campaign video, Ocasio-Cortez said, "I wasn't born to a wealthy or powerful family. mother from Puerto Rico, dad from the South Bronx".
Ocasio-Cortez's platform was primarily based on her ability to relate to the working class citizens as she and her family belong to that community.
"The state of Bronx public schools in the late 80s and early 90s sent her parents on a search for a solution".

I have SO many questions about what AOC's win (and, yes, I'm referring to her as AOC occasionally because it's too long a name to write out over and over) means - both for her and the party.
Crowley received only 42 percent of the vote, while Ocasio-Cortez earned 58 percent, the New York Times reported. She's a self-described democratic socialist, a pro-abolish ICE candidate, and is part of the ascendant progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
Ocasio-Cortez and Cardillo did not immediately respond to request for comment.
